The distinctive baroque rockers return with a renewed charge of feminist power, music powered by raw emotion and stylish instrumentation in equal measure. The songs on From The Pyre play out like fables, bolstered by cinematic soundscapes brimming with atmosphere and unease. Abigail Morris' vocal acrobatics are of course, a crucial part of the band's stagecraft, moving from choral sounds to a pure, powerhouse emotional crescendo on The Scythe or pivoting between steely tones and warbling country on The Killer Speaking. Elsewhere on Second Best, Morris flits between whispery vocals, speaking and arresting harmonies, a dizzying theatrical flair reminiscent of Florence Welch's dramatic production and powerful voice.
