In Profile: Wet Leg
Feral energy only from the English five-piece. Wet Leg is so back.
Formed in 2019 in an isle off the south coast of England by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, the band is now joined by Ellis Durand, Henry Holmes, and Joshua Mobarak. The outfit has spent the past few years on the road, building up their raw energy in electrifying live shows across the globe.
With the noisiness of Sonic Youth, the dry humor of Dry Cleaning, and the biting smackdowns of Bikini Kill, Wet Leg still exists in a world all their own. Their second album moisturizer has sharper teeth, a departure from their more palatable self-titled debut. It's bolder, grittier, and raw, but keeps the same infectious melodies that make listening to Wet Leg so much fun.
Wet Leg signed to Domino in late 2020. The band's 2021 debut single Chaise Longue exploded them into beloved figures in the indie rock sphere, the song soundtracking countless videos on TikTok. Their second single Wet Dream was met with similar praise, preceding their breakout debut album in 2022.
One thing is for sure: Wet Leg don't take themselves very seriously at all. This tongue-in-cheek playfulness has followed them through the making of their second record, dialed up to eleven as they cement themselves in their image and self-assured sound.
Everything about Wet Leg almost suggests that the band is a goof that went a bit too far. From the formation of the group (apparently born from a conversation on a ferris wheel in 2019) to the evocative name and self-aware lyrics, everything is done with a wink. This is why listening to them is such a pleasure- we're just happy to be in on the joke.
