Sad songs and emotional optimism. Scruffpuppie is the lo-fi visionary we need to buoy up and burnish our darkest days.

It was only a matter of time before someone ushered JJ Shurbet's emo pop-infused DIY mastery onto their roster. Signed to Phoebe Bridgers' Saddest Factory Records in August of this year alongside fellow upstarts Claud, Sloppy Jane and Charlie Hickey, Scruffpuppie's star power has been steadily rising ever since she began uploading covers and original music to YouTube over four years ago.

Scruffpuppie

Produced by Marshall Vore, the longtime Phoebe Bridgers collaborator, Scruffpuppie's debut studio album letters to nobody is 'a record of determination and self-determination, of hard-won confidence and contrition, of clarified spirit and abundant mind.' Drawing on her experiences with addiction and change, there is emotional dexterity in abundance here to carry and craft the reflective yet optimistic truth-telling narrative.

"JJ explores a lot of the more selfish sides of addiction, but, especially in her newest record letters to nobody, also talks a lot about the hope that lies in recovery, and becoming closer to yourself."

"The Scruffpuppie who was writing songs in her basement two years ago, is still writing songs but in a basement somewhere else" says JJ in a recent interview for Gay Times. The evolution of Scruffpuppie is by no means complete, but their authenticity and vision are certain. We can't wait to see what the future holds.

A self-penned bio

Scruffpuppie is a 20-year-old indie/alternative artist based in Los Angeles, California. Beginning the start of her career on YouTube, she has gained a following of over half a million fans over all platforms. Finding a form of catharsis in writing, JJ's music is a very personal experience, consisting of primarily guitar and her vocals. Scruff tells a story in every one of her songs, and doesn't hold back on an experience. Delivering lyrics that captivate the darkest corners of emotion, that a majority of her fans find comfort in. JJ explores a lot of the more selfish sides of addiction, but, especially in her newest record letters to nobody, also talks a lot about the hope that lies in recovery, and becoming closer to yourself.
